Vibrators
An enormous range of vibrators exist, falling into several broad categories:
- Clitoral - Often sold as "back massagers", these are powerful vibrators such as the Hitachi Magic Wand or the Acuvibe.
- Dildo-shaped - Approximately penis shaped, can be made of plastic, silicone or latex.
- Waterproof - Can be used wet, such as in the shower. Although marketed as waterproof, most should not be submerged.
- Rabbit, 'Jackrabbit' or 'Rampant Rabbit'- Two pronged for stimulation of both the vagina and the clitoris.
- G-spot - Similar to the traditional vibrator but with a curve and often a soft jelly like coating. The curve makes it easier to use to stimulate the g-spot or prostate.
- Egg - Egg shaped vibrator which can be used for stimulation of the clitoris or insertion into the vagina.
- Pocket rocket - Shaped like a cylinder, one of its ends has some vibrating bulges. It is meant to stimulate the clitoris or nipples, not for vaginal insertion.
- "Undercover" vibrators - Vibrators discreetly shaped as every-day objects, such as lipstick tubes, cell phones, or art pieces.
- Anal vibrators - Vibrators designed for anal use have either a flared base or a long handle to grip, to prevent them from slipping inside and getting lost.
- 'Butterfly' - vibrator strapped around legs and waist for hands free clitoral stimulation during sexual intercourse.
- Vibrating Cockring - vibrator (usually cordless) inserted in or attached to a cock ring, usually for stimulation of the clitoris.
- An egg shaped vibrator with remote controlMost vibrators use internal batteries, but some of them have a power cord and must be plugged into a wall power socket to work.
Dildos
There is some general disagreement about what precisely defines a dildo. There is general agreement that a nonvibrating device, resembling the penis in shape, size, and overall appearance, is a dildo. Some people include vibrating devices in this definition. Others exclude penis prosthetic aids, also called "extensions." Some include penis-shaped items clearly designed with vaginal penetration in mind even if they are not true approximations of a penis. Some people include devices designed for anal penetration (butt plugs) while others do not. Dildos can be used to penetrate both men and women. Dildos come in various sizes. Some people pay a greater sum for longer, thicker, and wider dildos to challenge their anus or vaginal area.
Playmates
Cheaper sex dolls are inflatable, using air. These lower price-range (less than £25) dolls are usually rather ugly, made of welded vinyl, and bear only a passing resemblance to women or men, but they have an (artificial) vagina or penis and their users are willing to overlook their shortcomings.
At the middle market price-range (£50 to £100), dolls are made of heavy latex without welded seams, have plastic mannequin-style heads and styled wigs, plastic or glass eyes, and properly moulded hands and feet. Some contain water-filled body areas. The manufacturing process causes most latex dolls to be delivered with a fine coating of zinc oxide covering the skin, and this should be removed by showering. Otherwise, latex is an inert and non-toxic natural material; although a tiny percentage of users may discover a latex allergy. All latex dolls of any quality currently on the market are manufactured in either France or Hungary.
More expensive sex dolls (£600 to £5,000 or more) are made from silicone. They can be very lifelike, with face and body modelled on real women or men, with realistic skin material (similar to that used for movie special effects), with realistic (or real) hair. These dolls usually have an articulate PVC or metal skeleton with flexible joints that allows them to be positioned in a variety of positions for display and for sexual acts. Silicone sex dolls are obviously heavier than inflatable ones (which consist of mostly air), but are about half the weight of a real human of comparable size. They are made in the USA by Abyss Creations (the RealDoll), 1st-PC, Mimicon and others; and in Japan by Paper Moon, 4Woods, Orient Industries (the CandyGirl) and others.
Silicone dolls are quite popular in Japan, where they are known as "Dutch Wives" ('datch waifu'). Their name originates from the term, possibly English, for the thick rattan or bamboo bolster, used to aid sleep in humid countries by keeping one's limbs lifted above sweaty sheets. There is even a rental service for 'datch waifu' in Tokyo, Doru no Mori, that specialises in sex dolls.
The middle market and high-end market emerged in the USA around 1995. The market has grown for two main reasons. Firstly, the last twenty years have seen huge improvements over earlier types of sex doll, and customers come to realize this through using the web. Secondly, the method of retail purchase has also improved - customers now select online instead of having to take "pot luck" in a sex shop, and a possible purchase can be discussed first in online forums with existing owners. Extras to customise a doll to one's personal taste (wigs, clothes, perfumes, etc) can also be purchased discreetly online.
Bondage gear
Bondage can be divided into six main categories:
- Bondage that pulls parts of the body together (rope, straps, harnesses).
- Bondage that spreads parts of the body apart (spreader bars, x-frames).
- Bondage that ties the body down to another object (such as chairs or stocks).
- Bondage that suspends the body from another object (suspension bondage).
- Bondage that restricts normal movement (hobble skirts, handcuffs, pony harness).
- Bondage that wraps the whole body or a part of it in bindings such as cloth or plastic (saran wrap or cling film "mummification") as well as sleepsack bondage.
Rope is a commonly used bondage deviceSome of the large variety of restraints used in bondage:
- Rope, often preferred because of its flexibility. Rigging, however, requires considerable skill and practice to do safely.
- Chains, including police handcuffs, thumbcuffs and belly chains.
- Institutional restraints, including straitjackets.
- Purpose-made bondage gear, such as monogloves, sleepsacks, bondage hooks and bondage tables.
Some simple bondage techniques:
- Verbal bondage, in which (as the name suggests) the top simply tells the bottom to do something.
- Simply tying the hands together in front or behind.
- Anchoring the hands to the front, back or sides of a belt at the waist.
- A spread eagle, with the limbs splayed out and fastened by wrists and ankles to bedposts, door frame or some other anchoring point.
- A hogtie securing each wrist to its corresponding ankle behind the back (wider, padded restraints such as bondage cuffs are recommended for this).
- A ball lock involves fastening a padlock around the male testicles, leaving the male at his partner's mercy for what could be a prolonged period, in private or concealed in public.
- The crotch rope involves pulling a rope between the labia to apply pressure to the female genitals. Sometimes a knot is placed in the rope at the position of the clitoris to intensify the sensation.
Enhancers
A penis sleeve is a cylindrical device that is placed on the shaft of the penis, with the aim of increasing stimulation for the person being penetrated. They often have soft bumps intended to provide further stimulation.
